  • The Great Ribbon Question

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who prefer grosgrain and those who prefer satin. I am a grosgrain person. I like a ridge. I like a texture. I like a ribbon that pushes back against the world.

Satin, by contrast, slides. It gleams, it flatters, it betrays. Our Autumn bow ties are made of both, because we are not monsters, but the grosgrain is on the outside, as a matter of principle. A 2.5 centimetre ribbon in cobalt costs us 9 treats per metre. We believe it is the finest 9 treats ever spent, and we are prepared to fight about it on a bench.

  • Fabric Report: A Eulogy for Polyester

Let us speak plainly about polyester. It does not breathe. It does not forgive. It crackles when stroked and clings to the fur like a regretful ex. We retired it from our atelier on the first of July in a small, tearful ceremony.

In its place, our new Collar Cloth Series offers a velvet mixed with Peruvian alpaca that costs 118 treats per metre and feels like being petted by a cloud. Our head of textiles, Ysolde Hairington, tested it by lying on a swatch for nine hours. ‘It is love,’ she reported, ‘but with seams.’ We have ordered 400 metres and our accountant has stopped speaking.
